Dandelions
"Dandelion Wishes" was written after my sweet Natey-baby (just turned 5) was picking seeded dandelions and told me he was picking me "wishes". Really? He could not be any sweeter. He's been picking dandelions for me since he was just little. This poem is still in progress but here is what I have so far...
Dandelion Wishes
Dew clinging to blades of grass,
just greening in newly-found
spring sun.
Bending down, his copper-toned
hair shimmering, sapphire-eyes
focusing as he unearths
spring’s first seed-dandelion.
“Mom, I picked you a wish!” his joy
rippling in the breeze.
Shoving it into my hand,
we gaze at delicate, white
pinwheels splayed on top of a dappled
launching pad of hope.
He waits eagerly for me to close my
eyes, blowing spores
across my yard, guaranteeing wishes
throughout the summer.
“Let’s wish together”, I suggest,
savoring the smile spreading
across his freckled face.
Wrinkling his nose, his chest expands
with loud intake of breath as
twirling flecks of silver soar
throughout the glowing sunlight
across greening grass.
This was in 2008, Nate was a little over two. My heart is just melting, how grateful I am for my very sweet boy!
